Lucky dogs

The fairy tale doesn't always end with the hero/heroine riding off into the sunset but these dogs have been given another chance. We don't always know where they go, but when we do hear anything, we will try to pass on the news. This month these dogs found new homes, many of them going to agility homes so watch out them on the show circuit.

Dogs are featured in alphabetical order.

 JULY 2010

Breed: Australian Kelpie

Contact: Ring Christina Long on tel: 01386 830 613 or email: christine.long@dogstrust.org.uk  www.dogstrust.org.uk

Happy Ending: Alistair has been reserved and is going to his new home this week. (24/07/10)

ALISTAIR

History: Alistair originally came from Ireland with no history.
Description: He is a black and tan, short-coated Kelpie with floppy ears. A keen and bright boy who loves tennis balls. Sadly he is finding kennels frustrating and stressful so does not show himself off well.
Rehoming criteria: All members of family and any existing dogs will have to come to the centre to meet before he will be able to go home. Adopters can be anywhere in the country provided they are happy to travel. Adopters will have to attend a talk.
Child friendly:
Older children recommended at present due to his stress but less likely to be an issue once Alistair is more settled.
Able to live with cats: Good with cats and horses
Age: 18 months
Sex: Dog
Neutered: Yes
Vaccinated: Yes
Micro-chipped: Yes
Flea sprayed & wormed: Yes
Cost: £75 donation

Update: Alistair is still looking for a home. He was rehomed recently and did really well but one of the adopters had an extreme allergic reaction so they had to give him back to us. (12/10/09)

Update: There has been quite a bit of interest in Alistair but nothing quite right yet. (20/04/10)

Happy Ending: Bobby has found a lovely new country home, not through Agilitynet this time. (05/07/10)

BOBBY

History: Bobby has come from a loving home with an elderly couple who loved him dearly. Sadly they are now both too ill to continue to look after him.
Description: Bobby is a short-coated black and white boy with one blue eye and one brown eye. He is at present very overweight as his previous owner could never remember if she had fed him or not so he got lots of meals! With the exercise he is now getting and smaller meals, the weight is falling off of him and he will soon be very handsome again!  He is very gentle with people and great with other dogs, not a nasty bone in him. He loves to play ball and is very lively despite his size, but will also settle well when told. He has good basic obedience and is housetrained. Bobby also travels well in the car/van.
Rehoming criteria: Bobby will fit into most households quite easily, but would like to have someone around him for some of the day as company.

Happy Ending: Catherine is keepig Buffy as 'she's just so darn lovely' (22/07/10)

BUFFY

History: Buffy was rescued from the Dublin Pound so her past unknown, but she was very undernourished.
Description: She is a gentle, small, pretty female collie with one brown eye and one blue one. Buffy needs general socialising as she is a little scared of people, and many noises e.g.: garage door shutting are clearly new to her. She is still chewing when nervous. Very affectionate and trusting once she has met someone. Good with other dogs – living with four others in foster home and no issues. Not possessive of food or toys. Knows sit and has reasonable recall, and is housetrained. She is quick in mind and action and can be very focused so should be good agility prospect!
Rehoming criteria: South Devon area preferred. She is not yet neutered but this is required as condition of rehoming if not previously done. Would suit agility home or could do with other stimulation but she is not hyper. South West only please as we  cannot homecheck elsewhere.
Child friendly:
Not known, Young children could be scary by their running about etc. but she is very gentle and does not nip.
Able to live with cats:
Not known
Age: Probably just under 12 months

History: Chase is a very handsome boy who came from Ireland originally with his two brothers.
Description:

Contact:  Ched has been transferred to
The Ark, Ashbourne Animal Welfare.
Email:  Welfareashbourneanimalwelfare@yahoo.co.uk  www.ashbourneanimalwelfare.org

Happy Ending: Ched has been reserved. (21/07/10)

CHED

History: Ched was brought into rescue by original owner who couldn't cope with a young lively dog as their circumstances had changed since getting him.
Description: He is a gorgeous looking dog - scruffy, hairy and his eyebrows have an entire life of their own! He has been described as a cross between something off Fraggle Rock & Chewbacca from Star Wars! Tricoloured, border collie X terrier?  Lovely boy, high energy drive, will need a lot of training but catches on very quickly. In under an hour he was introduced to clicker training, learned a wait and a recall over 2 very small (poles on ground) jumps. He would measure in at Large for agility. He can be destructive when left alone with nothing to do and is a bit noisy when ignored. At the moment, in kennels, he is not being stimulated anywhere near enough for his clever little brain so these problems should hopefully disappear once he is given something to do. Gets on with other dogs but wants to play so needs a like minded dog for company.
Rehoming criteria:  Ched needs an active home with an experienced owner who is at home for most of the day. We can only carry out home visits within an hours drive of Manchester so a local home would be preferred.
Child friendly:
Probably, he is very affectionate but may be a bit too bouncy for very young children.
Able to live with cats: Has seen the cats wandering around the site & is interested so maybe a home without the added excitement a cat can bring would be better for him at the moment.
Age: 10 months
Sex: Dog
Neutered: Yes
Vaccinated: Yes
Micro-chipped: Yes
Flea sprayed & wormed: Yes
Cost: £100
Where dog can be seen: Ashbourne, Derbys. (31/01/10)

Email: ericahyde@sky.com

Happy Ending: Darcy has now found his forever home. He is going to live with a couple who do agiity and already own his Auntie. (21/07/10)

DARCY

History: Darcy has been returned to me. He was purchased with a view to do Competitive Obedience and has had some obedience training, but his present owner has returned him as being too boisterous for her to handle.
Description: Darcy is a red Belgian Shepherd Tervueren. He is KC registered with a full pedigree. His parents both have below breed average hip scores and current eye certificates. He is a typical young male Terv, boisterous, playful, and a little wary of people he does not know, but very affectionate once he trusts you.
Rehoming criteria: Darcy really needs someone to channel his enthusiasm for life in general. I have had him here for a couple of months and recently started to introduce him to some agility equipment. He settled back in with my girls without any problems.
Child friendly: Unknown, but probably okay with older children but might knock little ones over.

Happy Ending: Dec ha found a new home. (22/07/10)

DEC

History: Dec came from a home where he wasn't being walked or treated like a collie. He then started herding them out of the house and herding them when they came in. Basically he was bored stiff! They were going to have him PTS because they couldn't cope. He is not a difficult collie at all, he just would prefer to be doing something!
Description: Dec is black/white, smooth coat with lovely prick ears. He is very friendly, walks wonderfully on a lead and is great with other dogs. He was being walked with another male collie and male Shitzu at the kennels. He loves to play with his ball and frisbee.
Rehoming criteria: Dec would suit an active home where he can use his brains as well as his legs!
Child friendly:
Not been tested but we think he would be fine with older children.

Happy Ending: Beautiful Hattie has been rehomed. (22/07/10)

HATTIE

History: This is beautiful Hattie, bred by breeder and kept until recently who, due to personal circumstances, has asked Valgrays to find a really lovely home.
Description: Hattie is a stunning chocolate and white girlie with a wonderful nature. She mixes well with other dogs, can play OTT and makes a lot of noise. She is great with people and excellent with kids. Hattie could be Medium size and is petite. She is a real on the go type and would definately love to do agility. She goes mad in just watching.

Happy Ending: Jack has been rehomed

JACK

History: Jack came into rescue as a stray, and despite being micro-chipped all efforts to reunite him with his owners were unsuccessful.
Description:
We cannot understand why he would not be wanted - he is an overly affectionate, friendly dog and somebody has obviously spent some time on his basic training as he is extremely responsive and already has a string of commands under his furry belt. Jack is short-coated, bright and quick to make friends here with both dogs and people. He has a lot of energy which could be productively channelled into agility. We are worried he may become bored in a 'normal' family home!
Rehoming criteria: Ideally a quiet home with an active, outdoor lifestyle.

Happy Ending: Jasper was rehomed today to a home in Evesham that found us via Agilitynet. (21/07/10)

JASPER

History: Jasper is one of nine pups born in rescue with us in October 2008. His mum is a lovely Spaniel/Collie cross. His dad is unknown but either Collie or Springer. We rehomed him as a puppy but he has grown up to need a more active, stimulating home.
Description: Jasper is a handsome boy who is a very bright, lively, lithe, athletic and affectionate lad - always up for an adventure. He has good prey drive and loves to retrieve, but is not hyper. He settles very well in the house once exercised. He is fantastic with other dogs - playful and respectful. He is strong-willed but responds very well to handlers that can give him good boundaries.
Rehoming criteria: Jasper would like to live as a member of the family in an active, stimulating home. We think he would make a terrific beginner/intermediate agility prospect.

Happy Ending: Lewis has found his new home. (21/07/10)

LEWIS

History: None though been in foster since July 2009
Description: Lewis is a collie-sized collie x GSD with stunning markings. He has been fostered with Hope Rescue since July 2009 and his training has come of leaps and bounds. His foster home reports that he could make a great agility dog. He is fostered with other dogs and plays well with dogs of all shapes and sizes. His foster home has worked hard with Lewis to overcome some negative behaviours including bike chasing and barking when left. Lewis’ basic training has come along really well and he now does a brilliant stay and will remain exactly where he sits even when you leave the room until you return.
Rehoming criteria:  Lewis is eager to learn and needs a dedicated, experienced owner to continue this in a home of his own.
Child friendly:
Lewis is good with children but would prefer a family with older dog savvy children as he was fearful of teenagers when he arrived.
Able to live with cats: Yes, with experienced owner and careful introduction
Age: 1 year old

Happy Ending: Lucas has been rehomed. (24/07/10)

LUCAS

History: Lucas was handed into our Scottish centre by someone who'd only had him 3 weeks and didn't have a garden. He was transferred to Evesham to increase his chances of getting a home.
Description: A light build smooth coated black and white boy. Lucas is a gentle and sweet affectionate boy with good manners. He loves to play fetch and plays nicely and also loves treats so he's easy to train. He likes mixing with dogs off lead and could be homed with another dog but gets frustrated and wound up if he is prevented from saying hello to another dog, for example if he is on the lead. Seems to be housetrained and should be OK to be left a few hours.
Rehoming criteria: All members of family and any existing dogs will have to come to the centre to meet before he will be able to go home. Adopters can be anywhere in the country provided they are happy to travel. Adopters will have to attend a talk.

Happy Ending: Mac has been rehomed. (21/07/10)

MAC

History: Mac was handed in to the centre for rehoming after his previous owners were struggling to cope with an active Border Collie puppy who has very little in the way of training.
Description: Mac is a handsome tri-colour boy who is on the tall side for a Border Collie. He would certainly measure into Large with ease. He is a gentle natured boy who is friendly with dogs and people, travels well in a car crate, is focused on toys or treats during training sessions and is a fast but agile runner. Anyone already 'collie savvy' will have no problems bringing on this pup he's quite a typical movement focused Border Collie, though thankfully not to the point of obsession and this would easily be channelled to your advantage in agility as he delights in working for rewards!  He is still very much a puppy and just loves leaping all over you and anyone you happen to be passing if he's allowed to!
Rehoming criteria: Mac would like a home where his new owners have previous experience of positive reward based training (e.g. clicker training).  His new home must be prepared to be consistent in working with Mac to teach him most of the basic cues (particularly recall) as the little he has been taught (sit, lie-down, paw) are a little rusty. Once this has been done, this reward will be enormous as Mac is a nicely balanced calm focused learner and will lap up all the lovely agility training.

Happy Ending: Matty has been rehomed.  (21/07/10)

MATTY

History: Matty originally came to us as a stray and was rehomed.  He then came back to us due to illness but is now well and full of love for life!!
Description: Matty is a gorgeous boy with a medium coat which has curls at the ends! He is black and white but quite uniquely marked. Matty is very active and playful. He is friendly and excitable. He is very, very, very clever and picks up new things very quickly. He is motivated by both food and toys. He wouldn't be a 'classic' pet dog and would need new owners that were willing to do training and possibly a doggy sport such as agility as he is a busy dog and loves to be doing things. He does have strong traits of his breed and will need his chase drive channelling into appropriate activity.
Rehoming criteria: Matty could live with older children that could positively influence his training.  He could live with another dog/dogs.  Would not be best placed to live with a cat. Matty could only be left alone short periods at the moment.

Happy Ending: Max the Australian Shepherd has finally been rehomed.  (14/07/10)

MAX

History:  Max is just a year old and is a rather stunning Australian Shepherd, he was given up because his mum lost her home and her job.
Description: Max is a tricolour blue merle boy. Max is sometimes a little shy at first, particularly with men, but if allowed to approach in his own time this is very short lived. He will be fine with older children, but no toddlers. Max loves other dogs and mixes well. He will learn to live with cats or any other animals as long as you put in the groundwork.
He has met horses, cows and pigs with me and decided that they were all highly dangerous and that the best course of action was to flee to the other side of a fence and then bark!
Rehoming criteria:  Max would love an active home, he has been well trained and is very obedient. He is a very bright boy and would benefit from a home where he can use his brain and his energy, so agility, working trials or obedience would be super.
Child friendly:
Yes - not babies or toddlers though
Able to live with cats:  Yes - we feel that Max would easily learn to live with cats

Happy Ending: Mishka has been rehomed. (21/07/10)

MISHKA

History: Mishka was originally saved from the pound on her last day, then adopted but returned. She is currently in a foster home and is such a good dog.
Description: Mishka is a lovely dog. We've had her for two weeks now. She had been doing some training and is such a fast learner. She sits, goes down, gives paw and really wants to learn. She likes the ball and will give it back to you with no problem. She is very fast and turns on a sixpence. She is great with all other dogs that she has met with us and we do see loads of different types - small and large. Because of her background, she will be better going to a home with medium size dogs or bigger as she does like to play. She is living with a 13 year old spaniel who told her off and nothing more was said. She has been great and whoever gives her a chance will not be disappointed.
Rehoming criteria: Mishka needs an active home and somewhere where she will be given lots of love, and training.
Child friendly:

Happy Ending: Just wanted to say thank you. We adopted Ziggy today. We need to work on his basic obedience but then he will start agility. We lost our old dog who did agility six weeks ago. Ziggy is a brilliant boy and will be company for our collie that we still have with us. Ruth  (27/07/10)

ZIGGY

History: Ziggy was found as a stray so we don’t have any further information.
Description: Ziggy is a very handsome black and white, short-haired male. He is a very affectionate chap, extremely bright and active. He is a small/ medium sized collie type with one blue and one brown eye. He is a fantastic boy with lots of potential who would make a wonderful companion to owners used to active collie types! He already knows all the basic commands and is a very fast learner.
Rehoming criteria: Ziggy needs an active home where he can be given lots of physical and mental stimulation. Ziggy would very much suit a home that would focus his mental energy as he excels when given  a job to do. He has lived with another dog in his foster home and would suit living with a family with other dogs.
Child friendly: We really would prefer teenage family or adult only home for Ziggy.
