Lucky dogs
The
fairy tale doesn't always end with the hero/heroine riding off into the sunset but these dogs
have been given another chance. We don't always know where they go, but when we do hear
anything, we will try to pass on the news. This month 15 dogs found new homes, many of them
going to agility homes so watch out them on the show circuit.
Dogs are featured in alphabetical
order.

Chance has found a
home. (25/05/10) |
CHANCE 1
History:
Chance came to our Somerset centre as his previous owners found he was too energetic for
them. They felt they were not providing everything he craves both mentally and
physically.
Description:
Chance
is a tri-coloured collie. He is
super intelligent and loves to be constantly challenged with new things to learn and do.
Although he has not yet started the basics of agility, we feel he would be the perfect
dog to do agility with or some form of equally challenging tasks such as fly ball as he
is such a fast learner! Due to him being
so anxious, he has become quite over-bonded to his main carer. Chance is currently under
assessment with other dogs so we are unable as yet to say if he can live with another dog
at the moment, but so far on lead he has been very playful.
Rehoming criteria: The family
who takes him on will need to be very patient with him and ensure enough activity for him
with you and others so he does not become anxious and over-bonded to certain individuals.
We, of course, can advise you further on this topic.

CHANCE 2
History:
Sadly Chance's owner is now very poorly and is unable to care for him anymore.
Description:
Chance is a handsome, deep red and white boy with a lovely nature. He is gentle and very
obedient. He is good on the lead and comes when called. He will even obey his fosters four
year old son! He has done obedience and agility with his previous owner. Chance loves
playing and running and does get very excited, and can be vocal in expressing this!
Chance is great with meeting other dogs out and about, ignores my cats, and loves the
children. He will come and sit at your feet and put his paw on your lap, asking for a
stroke, and looks at you with deep, dark eyes - how can you resist? Chance is
housetrained, and travels well in the car.
Chance has attended
obedience classes and has competed at an intermediate level. He thrives when he is doing
obedience; he loves to do things and loves this stimulation. Chance has done agility and
he can
do all the equipment. He really enjoys
the interaction with his handler and the exercise. Chance has lived with bitches and
cats, and
Rehoming
criteria: Chance really would like an agility home as he loves to 'do'
things. He may be better off living with bitches, but his original owner never had any
problems with him living with other dogs and bitches. He ticks all the boxes to be a
great agility dog so please consider Chance.
Child

Happy Ending: Danny has
recently gone to an agility home.
(13/05/10) |
DANNY (REVISED)
History:
Danny has sadly come to us for being a collie! He has lived with the same family all his
life. He is now a year old and they have had him since he was a pup. He has lived with
tiny kids but now they are running around and Danny wants a job so he has started to
heard them. Sadly this has lost him his home. Danny is
currently being fostered by Lorna Peachey.
Description:
Danny is a stunning tri, medium-coated collie. He has an active brain and is as loyal as
they come! He would love a job like agility as he is quick and agile. He is a very
confused dog. He does not understand why his dad has left him here. He is unsure of all
new people at the moment and is desperately searching for his dad but we sat quietly and
slowly he sidled up next to me for reassurance. He now recognises
me as a source of security - even in this short amount of time - and will gently wag his
tail when he see's me.
Rehoming
criteria: We
would like Danny to go to a home that will utilise his
brains, and not leave him all day. We will not home him with tiny kids. He is good with
other dogs. His old owner said that he is ball crazy and extremely agile, so maybe a fly
ball or agility home may suit. He is a stunning boy and just needs a gentle hand to teach
him about the great wide world.
Child friendly: Yes, but did herd them
when bored.

Update:
Danny is currently in foster care with Lorna
Peachey who admits that sometimes she wondered what on earth she had done. Danny had been
adopted for 11 months from Many Tears but proved far too much for his new family. He is a
very mixed up lad with so much affection you look at him and want to cry for him. On the
other hand, he's like an unruly child who has eaten too many orange Smarties. He needs
lots of time and patience and to learn what's wrong and right. If the right person came
along, he would be a very loyal friend. He does need someone to take charge of him and
let him be a dog. At the moment, he feels he needs to run round at 100 miles an hour,
making sure he has not missed anything. He is not for the faint hearted but Lorna says he
has already a special place in her heart

LASSIE
History:
Lassie was purchased by the family's daughter for the mother, but due to long working
hours really cannot give Lassie the time she needs. Lassie is shut up for many hours
which is so sad for such a young dog. The family have decided to surrender her to
Valgrays to find her a loving forever home.
Description:
As you can see she is a very pretty, tri colour blue merlie, spotty dotty collie girl.
She has a wonderful nature but is a bit shy to start with. She is great with children and
other dogs. She loves playing and loves her toys. She is fine to take food and toys from.
Lassie is good in the car and good off lead and has no hang-ups whatsoever. On our
assessment,
we feel Lassie would make a super dooper agility, flyball or obedience dog.

Molly has been reserved. There were more than 20 enquiries for her.
(20/05/10) |
MOLLY 1
History:
Molly was bought from a farm and her owners quickly became unable to cope with her as due
to lack of training, management and exercise she took it upon herself to jump and bark at
strangers to get attention and because she was frightened. Sadly this was reinforced to
the point where her owners got the impression she was aggressive! She was abandoned with
a lady who tried to give her a temporary home but didn't have the time or skills to sort
Molly out. Molly is now here with us where she has been assessed by a competent
behaviourist and is not aggressive at all. She's just taught herself a couple of naughty
habits!! During this time, she was not fed particularly well so her skin is currently
dry and flaky. Her coat a little brittle in places and she is underweight at 12.4kgs.
Apart from this, which is being addressed, my vets checked her over and say she's in good
health generally.
Description:
Molly is a very slight build, short coated, black and white girl. She is very well
balanced mentally which means she not only learns very fast, but also settles down in the
home well. Molly is a lightening fast runner already and still has a lot more muscle to
build. She travels well in the car and is very clean in the house. We have been working
alongside the behaviourist to get her responding to a range of basic cues. In addition,
I have also started Molly's heelwork so she has a fair base of training to start from.
N.B. For agility people - the cup heights (inset pic) are 35-65cm.
Rehoming criteria: Molly would fit well into any
active home who are willing to offer her a good balance of mental stimulation and
physical exercise. Ideally, her new home will have one or more existing dogs or offer her
plenty of opportunity for play with other well mannered dogs as she really enjoys
playing. Molly does not yet have a reliable, fluent recall and is still entire at present
so she will not be able to run offlead unless in a secure area. Any new home would have
to be prepared to take on and continue Molly's reward based training and also take the
time to understand her reaction to strangers.

MOLLY 2
History:
Molly has been with her current owners for 18 months. She was previously living with an
elderly owner who was unable to exercise her and she had not been well
socialised so was quite frightened of lots of things. Molly's
current owners have worked really hard with her to improve her confidence and have been
taking her to dog training classes where she has shown to be a very quick learner.
Molly's current owners work circumstances have recently changed and so in order for her
to have the kind of life she deserves, they have decided that she really needs a new home
where she can have company throughout the day with someone who has time to give her lots
of exercise, too.
Description:
Molly is a very well-natured dog. She is very affectionate and loves lots of cuddles. She
loves lying on her back and having her tummy rubbed. She seems to get on well with other
dogs. She lived with an older collie in her previous home and they got along well
together. So far at dog training Molly has learnt to follow commands like sit, down,
stay, come, and shake a paw. She walks quite well on the lead but likes a good run off
the lead and her recall is good but needs more practice in non-enclosed areas as she is
sometimes frightened by noises which scare her off. She travels really well in the car
and is housetrained. Molly would really benefit from
a home where she could do agility work.
Rehoming
criteria: Molly needs an active home where her training can be continued,
where she can be kept well entertained and her energy and enthusiasm put to good use. She
needs an owner who is at home during the daytime and who only generally needs to leave
her for short periods as being left alone can make her anxious, bored and frustrated.
Child friendly: Molly can get over excited by
small children and so would best suit a home with older children who can be assertive
towards her.
Able to live with cats: Molly has
lived with a cat but would probably be best in a home without one as she likes to chase
too much.

History:
Rudder was originally a farm dog but was not wanted. His last owners moved abroad and I
have taken him on but am finding him too much. Though I work from home, I don't have much

Description:
Rudder has a very nice character. He is very affectionate and
loves to play. He is easy to train. In the short time I have had him, he already leaves
the cat food alone though not the cats! He is underweight at the moment but has a good
glossy coat. He came to me like that and don't really know why. It could be through
stress and he has been wormed as precaution. He also has an EU Passport.

SMUDGE
History: Smudge is currently living at home with his mistress and
two young children. Unfortunately
when choosing a family dog his owner did not realise how much
exercise and mental stimulation a young border collie needs. As a single mum working
full time she is sadly unable to devote the necessary time, attention and discipline and
feels the ultimate act of kindness would be to re-home Smudge with someone who is able to
provide a loving home and help Smudge to reach his full potential.
Description: Smudge is a very
affectionate and intelligent, short
coated Tri-boy.
Unfortunately due to boredom he has become a little naughty and likes to chew footwear
etc. he will quite often challenge you with his 'prey' in order to engage you in a game
of chase! If he has not had sufficient exercise he has bursts of energy when he will run
around the house barking and he can become very excitable.
Rehoming
criteria: He
will require an active household and somebody prepared to discipline him. He was very
quick to learn all the basic commands but will need somebody who can devote time to
further training. He plays quite happily with other dogs and is quite submissive when in
the company of an older dog.
Child
friendly: He is very affectionate and loving towards children but on one occasion he became over
excitable and whilst playing nipped one of the children. Fortunately there was no injury
and wasn't considered to be an act of aggression but due to his energetic and over
excited state.
