Stop! Predatory Chase Seminar
Throwing a ball for a game of chase is an enjoyable and rewarding experience for many owners and their dogs. For other owners canine chase behaviour turns into a nightmare when their dog chases cyclists, cars or sheep. When their dogs choose what to chase it can compromise owners financially, cause the target severe injury or even death, and threaten the life of the dog. A good trainer or behaviour counsellor needs to be able to address inappropriate predatory chase behaviour swiftly and effectively. We’ll be looking at the reasons for the problem, the more effective solutions and how to alter the behaviour in this first day of a 2 day David Ryan (Chair of the APBC) Seminar.

On Lead Aggression & Canine Communication
This course will provide essential knowledge for anyone who has anything to do with dogs either on a professional basis, such as vets, behaviourists, dog trainers and those working in rescue kennels, or for pet owners.
The body language of dogs is often misunderstood and misinterpreted and our interaction can lead to conflict or even confrontation. By nature dogs are conflict solvers, and correct handling is extremely effective with dogs showing defensive behaviours, normally labelled by most of us as aggressive. Simply by using the correct body language we can help reduce a build-up of stress, consequently helping fearful, excitable and hyperactive dogs. Learn what you dog is thinking, learn how to communicate with him and make a start with solving any behaviour issues together!
Many dogs for example, are quite happy off lead but often their behaviour seems to deteriorate once they are on lead as they often lunge, bark and can be difficult to calm down. Why do they behave in a manner that society perceives as unacceptable and what can we do to help them to change their behaviour?
As a behaviour advisor and trainer Sheila has been working with defensive dogs for years on a regular basis with a huge amount of success. With an ever-increasing number of methods constantly presenting themselves she encourages constructive discussion whilst continuing to use gentle methods to encourage appropriate behaviour.
Sheila’s approach works for real dogs in the real world. She takes care to understand the needs of each dog and provide an appropriate programme according to those needs.
Sheila begins with putting the dog in a position to learn, building trust whilst reducing the likelihood of reactivity. Working outside the dog’s critical distance from the feared object - be it human or unfamiliar dog - allows the dog to build confidence in his abilities to cope without suppressing the fear and offering choices improves his coping strategies.
Whenever dealing with behaviour problems of any kind, Sheila always assumes an holistic approach within the limits of our skills and knowledge. An adage by which she lives is “First, do no harm.”
The following is implicit in Sheila’s work:
- Understanding the dog, its needs and aggression from the dog’s point of view
- Sympathetic consideration of the emotional state and feelings of the dog
- First-aid for decreasing aggression
- Techniques to prevent escalation of unwanted behaviours
- Teaching alternative behaviours and allowing the dog to make appropriate choices
- Developing observational skills and awareness
- Confidence building in dog and owner
- Handling skills to avoid conflict and to manage difficult situations
- Coping mechanisms and levels at which the dog can cope for optimum learning
- Stress reduction programmes
Focus will be on the theoretical during this course although slides and video footage will feature in the material presented and will provide a basis for analysis

What our Dogs Really Learn in Class
In order to effectively plan and manage classes which are in the best interest of the dog and owner it is important to understand what is really being learnt in class. Learning takes place well before and after the class itself; instructors and owners should become aware of learning both as a direct result of what is being taught and also as a result of the hidden curriculum.
Research suggests that the behaviour of many dogs attending classes actually deteriorates rather than improves. Their skill at performing exercises may improve, but their relationship with other dogs and handlers can become worse, although detrimental results may not be seen until well after the dog has left the class and encounters problems in the real world.
Sheila’s first dog is a prime example: Sam was an adolescent Border Collie, worried about other dogs and people. In class he was taught typical obedience exercises, which he performed well. However, outside of the class he couldn’t cope and showed aggression to people and dogs. Sam is not untypical of many dogs our current classes are failing to help with what is really needed.
Find out and learn
- Why every aspect of a class environment can have an impact on dogs’ progress
- Techniques to ensure that your classes provide a positive experience for all. It is vital to provide a quality education in class, where essential knowledge often requires real variety of canine and human skills along with high standards of observation
During this course, which includes particular reference to pet dog classes, Sheila will examine problems arising in class with the use of video footage.
There will be discussion of
• the effects of what dogs learn
• examples of good and poor practice
• strategies for creating a good learning environment
• avoiding common mistakes
The education of owners and the welfare of the dog are of paramount importance in all of Sheila’s programmes. Members of Sheila’s team aim to offer quality education to owners in order that they can understand and more easily manage their dogs in the real world. The group is unique in their approach to education, offering tailor-made programmes incorporating a balance of practical work along with discussion designed to fit the needs of individuals.

Ideas for Teaching Dogs in Class
A workshop that naturally follows on from the previous day’s course which demonstrated good and poor practice in dog training classes.
When we analyse what pet-dog owners want from classes, we find that they want a dog that fits in with the family; one that is well-behaved; instead they are often taught superficial exercises that have little bearing on real life. For many years the typical view has been that dog training instructors should be teaching a watered-down version of obedience. The majority of classes in the UK take place in a training hall or on a training field and often still focus on the 'sit, down and stay' type of exercises. However, as imposed control actually inhibits learning, we need to find strategies to teach self-control instead.
Life has never been so tough for dogs and the responsible dog-owning public. With all-too often stories in the news of dog bites, it is important to give pet-owners what they really need to know. Most dog owners attend only one dog training course with each dog they own, and we should ensure they are given the skills that will best help them deal with life’s challenges.
As someone teaching or helping out at a class, our aim should be to help owners understand how to have a relationship where the dog can fit into their household and is well-behaved in public. We should be teaching skills, not performance, and should aim to teach strategies for the real world rather than simply instructing exercises in a sterile, often unrealistic environment.
However, when faced with thinking of alternatives, many of those who would like to employ new strategies simply run out of ideas for what to include in the curriculum.
During this course Sheila offers practical ideas for quality teaching strategies in everyday life.
- What pet owners should expect from a good class
- How to make rational choices, leading to the development of a sensible dog displaying good behaviour in maturity
- How to cope in the presence of other dogs, cyclists & joggers in the wider environment
- How to encourage good socialisation through quality interaction with other dogs and people to maintain self confidence and knowledge of how to deal with situations
- How to maintain a healthy, enjoyable mutual relationship
- How to teach basics as a natural progression of a developing relationship

Canine Health Conference
This Canine Health Conference is organised by Action 4 Dogs in order to provide an informative platform for exchange of the latest Alternative Medicine, Nutrition and Complementary Therapies available to our canine companions.Conventional medicine is very good at treating emergency and urgent cases, but has less success with long-standing diseases that keep appearing when drugs are stopped. It is, therefore, not surprising that an upsurge in attention to holistic practices in Human & Animal Medicine would pique the interest of dog owners.
Opinions about canine nutrition vary among vets, breeders, trainers and the dog owning public. With so many different options and therapies on offer, how do we know what is best and what to choose? The bottom line is that even experts do not always agree on the best type of dog food, remedy or therapy. This Conference will explore the various solutions and will aim at helping us to make more informed decisions
Speakers will include:-
- Nick Thompson, Holistic Vet, BSc.(Hons), BVM&S, VetMFHom, MRCVS)
- Sally Askew, B.Sc. (Hons), C&G SAN, MBTER, MGEOTA)
- Maeve Grant, MCSP HPC ACPAT Cat A, BSc Hons Physiotherapy PgDip Vet Physio
- Tom Middlemas, Owner of Hydrotherapy and Rescue Centre, St Boswells, Scottish Borders
- Val Borland B.Sc. (Hons), TTouch Practitioner
Cost: £149 for Early registration fee if received before 1 September 2010; £169 thereafter. One day only: £90.00
Venue: Royal Highland Centre - Edinburh. The Conference will be held at the MacRobert Pavillion which is located on the grounds of the The Royal Highland Centre. This is a multi-purpose venue located on the outskirts of Edinburgh and next to Edinburgh Aiport www.royalhighlandcentre.co.uk

Cautious Dogs, Fearful Dogs
A one day course designed to increase awareness of many of the issues surrounding cautious and fearful dogs. It is important to understand the roots of fear and its contributory factors in order to be able to make a real difference. Learn how to offer strategies to dogs and owners that will help their lives become better balanced and less daunting.
Does your dog...
- Shy away from visitors and hide under the chair?
- Bark or lunge at other dogs or people through fear?
- Over-react to sights or sounds?
- Appear to cope in a busy environment yet react when he sees a person or dog as a speck on the horizon?
As a client attending a dog training club with her fear-aggressive Border Collie it was suggested that Sheila take him to the local market so that he could become better socialised. In fact, this was the last thing that was appropriate for a dog in his position, but unfortunately this kind of advice is still far too common even today. This is an opportunity to look at the do’s and don’ts of living with a cautious or fearful dog: take a more informed view of some of the myths surrounding this subject.
Topics to be included:-
- Contributory factors
- Health related aspects including acute and chronic symptoms
- The emotional aspect
- Dogs’ and owners’ needs
- Confidence building and problem-solving skills in both dogs and people
- Techniques to help
- Prevention and management
- Building relationships
- Case studies – fearful dogs and under-socialisation
Sheila has been working with fearful dogs since the late 1980s. A steady trickle of rescue dogs found their way to her over the years from a local rescue kennel, often as a last resort. Sheila has successfully rehabilitated and re-homed some of these dogs, although some were too fearful to pass on, so she has taken them in and continued to work and share her life with them.

A Practical Approach to Helping Cautious and Fearful Dogs
A natural follow on from the previous day’s course with the aim of helping owners develop practical skills and techniques that will encourage their dogs to gain confidence.
A big part of building confidence is about helping the dog to trust that his owner will not put him into difficult situations, will take care of his needs and although quietly encouraging him and acknowledging progress, will become aware of when he needs help and be prepared to step in. To build a balanced relationship we need to understand how the dog experiences the world in which we live and try to understand and accept not only what he is trying to tell us but also where his limitations lie. Learn an innovative, gentle and positive approach to understanding and working with cautious, fearful or under-socialised dogs.
Handler skills to increase the owner’s confidence in knowing:
- How and when to use rewards such as food and praise, and when to avoid them
- How to use techniques that the dog understands and will help him feel safe
- How to deal with varied situations and to avoid testing
Activities designed to:
- Build trust between the dog and handler
- Increase confidence building and problem-solving skills in both dogs and people
- Increase the dog’s awareness of his body
- Allow the dog to recognise that he can achieve what is important for him
Wherever opportunities are presented, discussion will include how to:
- Recognise and act on dog and owner limitations
- What to do when a dog seems cautious and how to deal with it
- How to encourage in a way understood by the dog
- Why intrinsic success is of the utmost important
The needs of each dog and owner will be discussed before suggesting activities in order to ensure choice of suitable practical work. Please note that these activities are dog-centred rather than owner-centred. Each dog will be treated as an individual, but many of the techniques can be applied to others when they are ready.
It is important to remember that it is quality, not quantity that is the key to building confidence and therefore we will be working on offering short, successful confidence building activities. The focus is not about getting dogs to perform, but how to recognise and acknowledge their achievements, thus building confidence.

Predatory Chase Workshop with David Ryan
Throwing a ball for a game of chase is an enjoyable and rewarding experience for many owners and their dogs. For other owners canine chase behaviour turns into a nightmare when their dog chases cyclists, cars or sheep. When their dogs choose what to chase it can compromise owners financially, cause the target severe injury or even death, and threaten the life of the dog.
David’s unique blend of practical experience and theoretical knowledge of canine behaviour fuel his particular interest in inherited predatory motor patterns and the lengths to which pets will go to find a way to express them, usually despite their owners’ best efforts. This workshop looks at the reasons for the problem, the more effective solutions and how to control the behaviour.
Venue: To be confirmed but will be Surrey, check website for details.
