Gain an insight into the way dogs use their body language to communicate, not just with other dogs but with humans and with other species. This language is essential knowledge for anyone who has anything to do with dogs either as a pet-owner or on a professional basis. It is also vital that we educate our children so that they will be safe around dogs. Dog behaviour is often misinterpreted, and as the canine species is frequently misunderstood. As a result interactions between dogs and people can lead to conflicts or confrontation. Dogs spend their lives communicating with us, but few of us comprehend what they are trying to say. Not only is this frustrating, but in the longer term the dog may become insecure, losing confidence in using a range of body language. Don’t worry: help is at hand! Observing and understanding canine language is within easy reach for any of us if we take the time to become aware of it. Along with understanding comes the ability to better communicate and recognise dogs’ needs and to solve conflicts in a way they can understand and to which they can respond. Dogs are the only individuals that can teach us more about dogs than humans can! Only by improving our powers of observation will we be better able to empathise and understand, building a good foundation and working towards a strong and trusting relationship with our dogs. This evening , for existing pet owners or those contemplating having a dog, will provide an insight into canine language and communication, including suggestions on how to naturally implement this gentle and positive philosophy into interactions with dogs. Slides and video footage will feature prominently in the material presented and will provide a basis for analysis: • Recognising canine body language • Understanding and acknowledging dog’s language and needs • Interactions between dogs and people • How to implement this knowledge in daily life with your dog: recognise signs and know how to respond in order to be safe around dogs • Interactions between dogs: how to recognise when your dog feels comfortable If it were possible, your dog would gladly pay for you to attend!

STOP! A seminar on Controlling the Chasing Dog
Throwing a ball for their dog to chase is an enjoyable experience for many owners. For other owners canine chase behaviour turns into a nightmare when their dog chases cyclists, cars, sheep or other dogs. When their dogs choose what to chase it can compromise owners financially, cause the target severe injury or even death, and threaten the life of the dog. This workshop looks at the reasons for uncontrollable chase behaviour, the more effective solutions and how to control the behaviour. David Ryan was a police dog handler and Home Office accredited training instructor for 26 years. After leaving the service he graduated with distinction in a postgraduate Diploma in Companion Animal Behaviour Counselling from Southampton University. He is an accredited Clinical Animal Behaviourist and the current chair of the Association of Pet Behaviour Counsellors. He provides companion animal behaviour counselling services on veterinary referral and an expert witness consultancy concerning both civil and criminal litigation involving dogs. David has appeared in the television series Crimefighters, focusing on his work with police dogs, and more recently as a guest on the BBC 4 programme It’s only a theory. His articles have appeared in publications as diverse as the Daily Telegraph, Woman’s Own and Veterinary Times. David’s unique blend of practical experience and theoretical knowledge of canine behaviour fuel his particular interest in inherited predatory motor patterns and the lengths to which pets will go to find a way to express them, usually despite their owners’ best efforts. In addition to spectator places, a limited number of working places are available. Spectators: £25, Handlers: £50

Problem Dogs 5 Day Workshop
Having a socially proficient dog is ever more important in today’s society. There is a huge amount of pressure on every pet owner to get their socialisation right with any dog, whether it be a puppy or rescue dog. Lists are produced with what a dog should see and emphasis is put on attending puppy playgroups or training classes. One question we should all be asking is this: Is all socialisation appropriate or are there examples of poor practice which adversely affect the developing personality of the individual dog? So, what is quality socialisation? Contrary to popular opinion, socialisation doesn’t stop after puppy age. Quality socialisation should not be prescriptive! It is whatever is appropriate for each individual according to his stage of life, past experiences, and situations that this dog will be most likely to encounter in the future. It’s definitely a life-long process! Whether puppy, adolescent or adult, many dogs lack the polite approach that their mother would supervise if she were still able to influence her offspring’s behaviour. Often we see dogs regardless age or breed that either bully or intimidate, rushing directly up to other dogs and people or children, or those that run away, bark, cower or snap at the approach of another dog. Unfortunately it’s a well-known picture for many dogs. From society’s point of view it’s very important that dogs can socialise appropriately, however from the dog’s point of view it’s even more important. To learn the right skills enables them to cope in our increasingly demanding society. During this 5 day workshop theoretical sessions are interspersed with practical activities with the aim of helping you identify your dog’s social needs. We will help you to gather some techniques and ideas on how to help your dog where behaviour issues have arisen over time. This is not achieved by the use of commands and telling him what to do or not to do, but by understanding his language and as a result his needs. Your dog does not have to have issues to attend this course! The idea is that we give you the tools to be able to make a start on practical help for managing and handling dogs with problems. Whether your dog needs help with other dogs, with humans or specific situations, learn how to:

  • Observe the needs of your dog and evaluate any issues he may have.
  • Give valuable support
  • Understand the consequences of under - or over- stimulation and avoid this
  • Give your dog the stimulation he needs
  • Offer your dog a gradual introduction to appropriate situations
  • Practise good socialisation in order to rehabilitate his social skills
  • Improve your handling skills
  • Learn first-hand techniques for problem solving between dogs / dogs and people
Any kind of socialisation will be at distance initially allowing each dog to communicate appropriately. Contact will only be made if it is deemed to be in the best interest of any individual. Expect plenty of discussion and analysis!

Ideas for Teaching Dogs in Class
A workshop that naturally follows on from the previous day’s course which demonstrated good and poor practice in dog training classes. When we analyse what pet-dog owners want from classes, we find that they want a dog that fits in with the family; one that is well-behaved; instead they are often taught superficial exercises that have little bearing on real life. For many years the typical view has been that dog training instructors should be teaching a watered-down version of obedience. The majority of classes in the UK take place in a training hall or on a training field and often still focus on the 'sit, down and stay' type of exercises. However, as imposed control actually inhibits learning, we need to find strategies to teach self-control instead. Life has never been so tough for dogs and the responsible dog-owning public. With all-too often stories in the news of dog bites, it is important to give pet-owners what they really need to know. Most dog owners attend only one dog training course with each dog they own, and we should ensure they are given the skills that will best help them deal with life’s challenges. As someone teaching or helping out at a class, our aim should be to help owners understand how to have a relationship where the dog can fit into their household and is well-behaved in public. We should be teaching skills, not performance, and should aim to teach strategies for the real world rather than simply instructing exercises in a sterile, often unrealistic environment. However, when faced with thinking of alternatives, many of those who would like to employ new strategies simply run out of ideas for what to include in the curriculum. During this course Sheila offers practical ideas for quality teaching strategies in everyday life.

  • What pet owners should expect from a good class
  • How to make rational choices, leading to the development of a sensible dog displaying good behaviour in maturity
  • How to cope in the presence of other dogs, cyclists & joggers in the wider environment
  • How to encourage good socialisation through quality interaction with other dogs and people to maintain self confidence and knowledge of how to deal with situations
  • How to maintain a healthy, enjoyable mutual relationship
  • How to teach basics as a natural progression of a developing relationship

Cautious Dogs, Fearful Dogs
A one day course designed to increase awareness of many of the issues surrounding cautious and fearful dogs. It is important to understand the roots of fear and its contributory factors in order to be able to make a real difference. Learn how to offer strategies to dogs and owners that will help their lives become better balanced and less daunting. Does your dog...

  • Shy away from visitors and hide under the chair?
  • Bark or lunge at other dogs or people through fear?
  • Over-react to sights or sounds?
  • Appear to cope in a busy environment yet react when he sees a person or dog as a speck on the horizon?
As a client attending a dog training club with her fear-aggressive Border Collie it was suggested that Sheila take him to the local market so that he could become better socialised. In fact, this was the last thing that was appropriate for a dog in his position, but unfortunately this kind of advice is still far too common even today. This is an opportunity to look at the do’s and don’ts of living with a cautious or fearful dog: take a more informed view of some of the myths surrounding this subject. Topics to be included:-
  • Contributory factors
  • Health related aspects including acute and chronic symptoms
  • The emotional aspect
  • Dogs’ and owners’ needs
  • Confidence building and problem-solving skills in both dogs and people
  • Techniques to help
  • Prevention and management
  • Building relationships
  • Case studies – fearful dogs and under-socialisation
Sheila has been working with fearful dogs since the late 1980s. A steady trickle of rescue dogs found their way to her over the years from a local rescue kennel, often as a last resort. Sheila has successfully rehabilitated and re-homed some of these dogs, although some were too fearful to pass on, so she has taken them in and continued to work and share her life with them.
