At the London Olympia International Horse Show
Supported by GWF Joint Aid for Dogs

19 – 23 December 2012

It may have been the year of the Olympics but there is only one thing top dog agility handlers are thinking about and that's Olympia, the home of one of the most important dog agility finals in the world – The Kennel Club Agility Stakes. It is an amazingly popular sport and a British one at that! It started in 1978 when the Kennel Club asked some dog trainers to put together a fun event for the main ring at Crufts and here we are, 34 years later, with agility being the leading canine activity sport in the world with countries as far afield as China, USA, Australia and of course, the whole of Europe – in fact just about every country in the world has dog agility competitions including both World and European Championships.

Important Message for Olympia Qualifiers

Dave Ray has been informed that the Semi-final of The Kennel Club Large Agility Stakes will start 30 minutes earlier on Saturday morning, 22 December. In the briefing notes, all competitors have been told its 9am briefing which will remain the same at the moment but, If everyone is booked in early we will bring it forward to 08.45am. Saturday, 22 December. 9.00 am Briefing. New time... 9.15 am The Kennel Club Large Agility Stakes Semi Finals.

Introduction to Olympia

Dave Ray wrote this overview of agility for the Olympia catalogue which he has shared with us.

The popularity of agility in the UK continues and entries at Kennel Club licensed Championship and Open agility shows continue to increase year on year. This is no doubt helped by the fact that our Kennel Club allow pedigree and non-pedigree dogs to compete in the working disciplines shows which of course include agility. Unfortunately, this is not the case throughout the rest of the world where some countries will only allow crossbreeds to compete in very limited classes. Agility in the UK is definitely a sport for all dogs so if you want to ask the experts about agility then do call in to the Kennel Club stand in the shopping area where advice and information about licensed agility shows will be available.

This is the 34th year that the Kennel Club Agility Stakes Finals have been held at Olympia and it is, in itself, a world class event. In fact, the only event that is comparable is Crufts. Certainly when it comes to Christmas it is the only place where the UK’s top handlers want to be.

No dogs are invited to Olympia; every dog and handler has to earn the right to be in the final. Heats are held throughout the country during the year, culminating in a semi final at the City of Birmingham Championship Show in September, ensuring dogs not only have to come in the top five in one of the qualifying classes competing with up to 450 handlers and dogs in each heat, but then competitors also have to come out in one of the top places in the semi finals.

The first day for agility at Olympia is Wednesday, 19 December and the curtain raisers are the ABC dogs - or I should say the 'Anything But a Collie' dogs. As with all the competitions at Olympia, the handlers and dogs have had to qualify via a rigorous process just to compete in the finals at Olympia. Twenty heats were held at Kennel Club licensed shows. Then a 60 dog Semi-final was held at the City of Birmingham Show in September, and the top ten dogs have come forward to the first day at London Olympia. This is always a great competition with usually many different breeds competing including Australian Kelpies, Australian Shepherds, Crossbreeds, Beardie, Belgian Shepherd, Lurcher, Golden Retriever and even a Weimaraner. You certainly don’t have to have a fast Collie to compete at the top level.

On Thursday we have the KC Agility Stakes Final for Medium Dogs. 18 heats were held at Kennel Club licensed shows throughout the UK with the top two from each going forward to the semi final. The top ten from the semi final are competing in the Grand Finals at Olympia. This year as usual we have a variety of breeds competing including Working Cocker Spaniels, Kelpies and even a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever!

On Friday, it is the finals for Small sized dogs 350mm or under at the shoulder and this year we have a variety of breeds competing from Posh Poodles to Working Cocker Spaniels and a couple of game little Terriers, a Jack Russell and a Patterdale. Eleven heats were held at Kennel Club licensed shows and from these, the top three dogs from each heat went forward to the semi final at the City of Birmingham Championship Show. Then from this semi final, the top ten have been invited to compete at Olympia. What they lack in size, they certainly make up in personality, ability and speed so watch out for the racing rascals!

On the Saturday morning at Olympia, it is the finals of the original Kennel Club Agility Stakes competition - or perhaps we should say semi final as we start the morning off with an Olympia semi final. Thousands of dogs entered the 14 nationwide Kennel Club heats for this competition, open to top winning large dogs eligible for Grade 6 & 7, which of course are the top KC competition grades. The top five competitors from each heat are invited to one of the two highly sought after semi finals and the top eighteen from each of these semi finals are invited to compete in the prestigious event at Olympia. We have 36 dogs coming forward to Olympia on the Saturday morning in the Main Arena where we have an Olympia Semi Final, the top ten of which qualify for the Grand Finals on the Saturday night with the next ten being invited to compete in another event on the Saturday afternoon. So you can be sure of one thing - you will be seeing the very best of the UK’s senior and advanced dogs competing! As usual with this class, it is dominated by Border Collies or Working Sheepdogs. They really are the athletes of Large Dog Agility so it is sure to be one of the most exciting finals this year.

On the Sunday, we have the Kennel Club Novice Agility Stakes. This is for Novice dogs and not Novice handlers. As I think with most sports we have a grading system with Grades 1 - 7. New dogs handled by experienced handlers start in Grade 3 and this Novice class is open to dogs who, at the time of qualifying, were working in Grades 3 – 5. Fourteen heats were held at Kennel Club licensed agility shows and is by far the most popular qualification event, with up to 1,000 dogs in each one of these qualifying shows with the top three dogs going forward from each class or part of if numbers dictated a split. These top dogs from the heats or split classes go forward to two semi finals, the same as the Large Grade 6 – 7 dogs. These semi finals were also held at the City of Birmingham Championship Show. Then from these two semi finals, the top 18 are invited to compete in the Olympia semi final on Sunday morning with the top 10 going forward to compete in the Kennel Club Novice Agility Stakes Finals on the Sunday evening and those placed 11th to 20th invited to compete in a competition during the matinee performance. So this is another competition where the selection process ensures that only the very best of agility dogs are competing in what I’m sure will be an extremely exciting final.

So whichever day you visit Olympia this year, you are definitely going to see some of the most exciting and fast agility competitions that the agility world has to offer, including handlers who have competed in the Championships at Crufts and represented the United Kingdom at the World and European Agility Championships.

Judging the agility at Olympia is one of the most prestigious once in a lifetime appointments available and hence only the most skilled, experienced and respected judges are invited and this year’s event is no exception. Our 2012 judge is Mrs Amanda Rodgers. Amanda is a Championship Agility Judge, and judges throughout the UK on a regular basis. She competes at the highest levels and also organises and manages agility events and most importantly, she is a well respected member of the agility community.

For the competitors, qualifying for the Agility Stakes Finals at Olympia is the icing on the Christmas cake, and forget the Olympic Gold medals - what they’re after is a red rosette and a beautiful piece of Kennel Club crystal engraved with the words 'Kennel Club Agility Stakes Winner - Olympia 2012'.

The Final Line Up

The finalists for the Kennel Club Olympia Agility Stakes, one of the most exciting dog agility events in the world, have been announced.

The country's most talented agility dogs and handlers have been vying with each other in qualifying heats at agility shows across the country throughout the season, in an attempt to gain a coveted invitation to compete in the finals. The Kennel Club Olympia Agility Stakes take place as part of the London International Horse Show, which will be held at Olympia from 17 – 23 December.

The Stakes are held in association with Joint Aid for Dogs, and will see dogs and their owners compete in five finals, in the small, medium, large, novice and ABC (Anything But Collies) categories. There will also be two Semi-finals, for the Novice and Large dogs categories which will see 36 dogs in each category whittled down to ten who will go on to compete in the finals.

Caroline Kisko, Kennel Club Secretary said: 'The Olympia Agility Stakes is one of the major dog agility events in the UK each year and provide a real spectacle in the run up to Christmas. We would like to congratulate all of the finalists and look forward to what is set to be another exciting year for the event.'

Last year the event attracted over 81,000 visitors and is set to be just as successful this year. Judging the 2012 Kennel Club Olympia Agility Stakes will be Amanda Rodgers, wife of the Semi-Final judge Arthur Rodgers.

The dates for the dog agility competitions will be:-

  • ABC final – 19 December

  • Medium Agility Stakes final – 20 December

  • Small Agility Stakes final – 21 December

  • Large Agility Stakes Semi final and final – 22 December

  • Novice Semi final and final – 23 December

Olympia Semi-Finals Judge's Report & Results

The Semi-Finals were judged by Arthur Rodgers who sent this report.

Knowing what competitors have gone through to get to this stage, I did feel the pressure to come up with courses that allowed them to show off their skills and not to put up a course which was so complex that they blow their confidence before they stepped in the ring. I wanted them to feel they could achieve their goal, relax and enjoy the experience. As it turned out, I was extremely pleased with all the courses I set especially how different parts tested the dogs and handlers. Many faults were caused by the handlers themselves and the subtleness of the course design. The comments I received from many competitors were a tremendous boost for my confidence, thank you. Judging at this high level is not easy and it requires full concentration for every dog. And yes, I do judge under full Kennel Club rules which include the up contacts.

The Semi-finals are a very stressful event for the competitors with one warm up run before each Semi to calm them down, and this is particularly so with the first time Semi finalists.

There were many fantastic runs - too many to mention individually. All the Semi finals were tense affairs. Many people left extremely happy while others were disappointed. There is always another year! Going to Olympia are some familiar faces but there are many new ones and I know you will all enjoy the experience. I'll be watching you!

The ABC Final was the most difficult to set a course, and course time for as the Grade range was 1- 7. Congratulations to the winners and those invited to attend Olympia on the opening night.

Thank you
My sincere thanks to the Kennel Club for inviting me to judge this prestigious agility event. It is an honour to judge such a wonderful and talented bunch of agility handlers and their dogs.

The whole event, qualifiers, semis and finals, couldn't be run if it wasn't for the Kennel Club and the support of Joint Aid and thanks must be given to them. I must also thank the ring party for the weekend. Although I stayed in a hotel down the road, I was extremely well fed at the campsite. Chef Dave Ray, along with the contributions of puddings and drinks made by the others in the group made the evenings very sociable indeed. Thanks to Kate, Paul, Shaun, Liz, Rob, Roger, Pauline and Pauline for all their hard work on the paperwork and course building. I nearly had a strike on my hands the second day when I brought Rob a bacon sandwich from the hotel. I redeemed myself the following day when I brought three more with me. Thanks to Roger for entertainment in the evenings and Dave for keeping us all organised. Particular thanks must go to all the competitors who made my weekend very special, thank you. Enjoy your fantastic day at Olympia. Win or lose, you will have a very memorable day!

Below are the results of the Semi-Finals held at the City of Birmingham Championship Show. The Judge Arthur Rodgers has kindly supplied copies of his courses so you can try them out at training.
