A collection of agility facts and fancy

Unashamedly based on Schott's Original Miscellany, its companion Schott's Food & Drink Miscellany and the new Scott's Almanac, the purpose of this page is to gather the flotsam and jetsam of the agility world. It makes no claims whatsoever to be complete, authoritative or even practical - just fun. This is our Christmas present to you. Sit back with a glass of something and a mince pie and enjoy...

And if you have any lists that you would like to share or would like to add some of your own ideas to the ones below, just email them to Agilitynet.

The Hoop (Tyre)

The 'new' Kennel Club regulations state that the aperture (that's the hole) should be a diameter 457mm (1ft 6ins) minimum and the centre should be this far from the ground.

  • Large Dogs: 800mm (2ft 7.5ins)
  • Medium Dogs: 550mm (1ft 9.6ins)
  • Small Dogs: 490mm (1ft 7.3ins)

Excuses Excuses
Assorted reasons - real and imaginary - why handlers don't go clear every time.

  1. The jumps were the wrong colour.
  2. I didn't want to go clear as I didn't want to win out!
  3. I forgot the dog's name.
  4. I was running someone else's dog.
  5. I walked the wrong ring.
  6. This was our first show.
  7. I am dyslexic.
  8. If I hadn't been E'd, I'd have won!
  9. We've been training over lower jumps.
  10. My dog went to say hello to the judge/pole picker/partner/child with ice cream cone.
  11. The judge was blind.
  12. Forgot to wear my lucky training socks
  13. The ground was too hard/soft/wet/dry etc.
  14. My dog can't run in the heat/cold/rain or sunshine.
  15. I would have rather been in Part 2.
  16. I couldn't hear the final call for entries from the car park.
  17. There were too many people walking the course.
  18. Childbirth destroyed my brain.
  19. Another dog must have peed in the tunnel.
  20. There was a loud noise next to the ring and it put my dog off.
  21. The queue for the loos was too long and I didn't get a chance to go before my run.
  22. I forgot how to count.
  23. My dog is highly strung and doesn't like crowds.
  24. A breed of dog my dog doesn't like walked by the ring just as I was on the line.
  25. People were standing too close to the edge of the ring.
  26. My dog had low blood sugar.
  27. I had low blood sugar.
  28. I had a hangover.
  29. The Ring Manager decided to have a tea break when I was next on the line.
  30. The Judge was wearing very strong after shave/perfume.
  31. One of the pole pickers was eating a burger ringside.
  32. My mobile phone rang while I was running.
  33. My shoes were too small.
  34. Must go on a diet next week.
  35. Am thinking about getting a sports bra.
