Shetland Sheepdog

In a nutshell: Small, long-haired dog with a busy attitude to life.

Sheltie showing a typical love of work clearing a hurdleKnown as: Sheltie

Description: The Shetland Sheepdog is a small long-haired working dog.  He must be sound, agile and sturdy.  The expression should be alert, gentle, intelligent and questioning. You can wear their coats, if you can find someone to spin the brushings for you. There is a colour for everyone, sables ranging from pale gold to dark shaded, tri-colour and blue merle, all with varying amounts of white, or black and white.

Temperament: They are loyal and affectionate with their owners, a sheltie with the classic temperament can be a bit standoffish with strangers but not unfriendly.

Advantages as an agility dog:

  • They learn quickly

  • They love to work

  • They can be very fast

Disadvantages as an agility dog:

  • Size can be difficult to predict with some puppies. What was bought to be a mini dog, could grow into a midi.  A few end up over 17 ins.

  • Some believe that their mouths need to work in unison with their legs, so the faster they run, the louder they shout about it!

Rating out of 10: 10/10 They are cute, fast, and love to work!

Examples of dogs that have done well in agility: There are several but the first to come to mind are, in GB are

  • Louise Saunders’ Torriglen Taking Steps, the first winner of a Mini agility CC

  • Shirley Turner’s Myndoc Simply Teena

  • Chris Moody’s Teddy A Go Go

  • Dave Sweeney’s Peartbrook Dark Dreamer

In USA their Mini World Agility Team last year was well represented by Shelties.

What's it like to live with as a pet: They are noisy, excitable, but great fun. They will join in with everything you do, whether you want them to or not!

Would you buy another one for agility? Always!
