Give your dog an energy boostReviewed by: Christine Stratford
My experience: I had been looking for quite a while for an energy bar for Poppette to give her that vital boost at the end a long day but I wanted something that was really easy to digest and not bulky. I had looked on the web and found several products but none were readily available in the UK. A lot of them were American. It did the job. Eventually I came across a site dealing with working dogs and Pemmikan was recommended so I thought I would give it a go. On a trip to The State I visited several 'pet shops' - shop isn't really the word, more like supermarkets with everything from toys to vets and training areas. Once again Pemmikan was recommended. I tried the bar on Poppette and she liked it. What I like: I only give Poppette 50g as she is so small. I find it best to give it to her twice during the day. It has definitely helped. Before I started using it she would flag at shows. Three classes really were her limit, but since we have been using it she manages that and more. As we often enter the Eukanuba Knock Out which could mean three or more flat out runs, she manages this and the regular classes. I think it is particularly good when used in temperature extremes - hot and cold. I have been using it for a couple of years now and am really pleased with it. It keeps well and is handy to use as it divides up into small pieces. It is easy to cut up into portions which can be used as titbits. The effects of the Kronch Pemmikan set in after about 30 minutes, and maximum effect is reached after approximately 90 minutes. What could be improved: Nothing really. You do have to experiment on how much to give your dog at a time. As I said before I only give Poppette one segment (50g) at a time which seems just right. 100g made her a bit full of herself and seems a lot to give a small dog who only just tops 12 inches. Production: The Kronch Pemmikan Bar is a no frills, workman-like product. It comes wrapped with a plastic inner wrapped and paper outer. Each bar weighs 400 grams and contains approx. 6000 Kcal/Kg. Instructions: Pretty basic. It comes with easy to follow feeding instructions on quantity to be given (mid-day). Price: £3.95 each not including VAT. UK delivery only at £5.95 + VAT per delivery for any number of bars so buy a few and save money! Split an order for several bars with a friend or keep them all to yourself. Value for money: Yes. definitely. I buy it whenever I see it and, if necessary, store it in the freezer. I am really pleased it is now available in the UK through Agility Warehouse and other suppliers. Overall rating: 10/10 - It does everything I want. Available on-line from
Agility Warehouse About the Supplier...
Poppette (Pick a Poppette or Two) is her first competitive dog although she used agility as a training medium for a previous terrier with temperament and control problems, i.e. he never competed! Poppette came from the Police Pound with only a couple more days to live. She was about 6 month sold and completely untrained. She had been on the streets for a while as the dog warden was unable to catch her. She won into Grade 6 and has also qualified for the K/O at Crufts for the past two years. Christine works for British Standards where she is Head of Section (Lighting & Technology). Her work entails quite a bit of travelling both in the UK and abroad as she represents the UK on various national and international committees. She says that retirement beckons and it is looking more and more attractive! First published 17/07/08 If you would like to comment on this product
